How To Keep A Clean House: A Slacker’s Guide

I have been thinking a lot about this. Housekeeping seems to be the biggest struggle for me. It’s hard to even choose a biggest struggle, because at times it seems like I am mismanaging everything. Alas, keeping my house clean is the most challenging. I whined a lot about not having time or energy. I blamed a lot of things. Once I settled on the reality of the situation, I actually had a lot more peace and decided to come up with an action plan.

So, what’s the reality?

The reality is that I desire a clean house, and I have the time, I just don’t prioritize properly. When I say properly, I mean properly for me. Your priorities may look totally different and that’s ok. I know that having a clean house makes me happy and relaxed, so I need to make it a priority.

Time management is tough. It’s even tougher when you have a home based business and two kids at home. Two kids are messy. My toddler is a tornado, naturally, and my seven year old may as well be the same. Exhibit A: Grayson’s place at the table.

See what I’m saying? Constant grossness. I have started using Libman products for cleaning up and I am loving them. A good broom is a must-have in my kitchen, so I am loving their Wide Angle Broom and Dustpan. The quality is great and they are made from recycled PET bottles, which I love! I also have a tendency to not start a task until I know I can finish it all at one time. That’s unrealistic when it comes to cleaning house. Cleaning my entire house at once would require a quiet, empty house for several hours and a wide open schedule with no responsibilities. Since that is highly unlikely to ever happen, I have to come up with another solution.

The first step for me is prioritizing what house cleaning tasks I feel are most important to get accomplished weekly. Then, I needed to break it out into 7 days and commit to a schedule. There will always be the daily tasks of dishes, etc. But, these are the tasks that I tend to put off repeatedly. Here is the chart I made myself:

Your chart may look different and that’s ok! Simply decide what tasks are done on a weekly or biweekly basis and prioritize. Break it up throughout the week based on your lifestyle and schedule and COMMIT. I bet it will be easier for you AND me to keep a clean house!     I like your breakdown of the weekly tasks. It is something I struggle a lot with which means most of my Saturdays are spent cleaning. Sometimes I wonder if it would be easier to hire a cleaning service to clean my house once a month, but it would still leave the thirty days inbetween. As long as I remember to vaccuum and sweep a couple of times a day I normally do fine, but I should write up a schedule like yours.

    It is important to find what works for you and your family for sure as housework is a never ending task. I am still trying to find the right schedule for me and it’s a work in progress. I keep trying and am confident that I will get it one of these days. Thanks for sharing!

    Your cleaning schedule is awesome! I suggest to include kids or other members of your family, it will help you save time for other tasks.
